Private 11660 Thomas Edward Oliver
King’s Shropshire Light Infantry

 

 

Thomas Edward Oliver was the son of Pryce and Emily Oliver, of Castle View, Llanfechain. His unit, 6th Bn., King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, was part of the 60th Brigade of the 20th (Light) Division.  The Division was established in September 1914 as part of Kitchener's Second New Army.  The Division deployed to France in July 1915 and was concentrated in the Saint-Omer area.  It is not known in what action Private Oliver was involved but he is recorded as having died on 12th February 1916 aged 25. He is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, West-Vlaandern, Belgium (Grave Reference: II. D. 41A.)

     

The Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery is located 12 Kilometers west of Ieper town centre. The cemetery contains 9,893 commonwealth servicemen, a few of whom were brought in from the battlefields after the Armistice, and 883 war graves of other nationalities, mostly French and German. It is the second largest commonwealth cemetery in Belgium.
