Farrier Quartermaster-Sergeant John H Humphreys of the Old Talbot Inn, Llanfechain (pictured below) died suddenly on Saturday 8 Jan 1916 aged 57. Some months before, whilst training horses for service, he had been kicked in the chest causing damage to his right lung. Although not at the front, many older soldiers were engaged in the critical work of training men and horses for the war. John Humphreys was one such soldier. He was about to receive his discharge from the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry after 25 years of loyal service. He is buried in Llanfechain. At his funeral, attended by many of the village, a volley was fired over his grave by a military escort of his Regiment. |
