David Hughes was the son of Evan and Mary Hughes of Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire; a chauffeur prior to enlistment. His Battalion, the 2nd Bn,  Royal Welsh Fusiliers, was formed in April 1914, landed at Rouen in August of that year and was allocated to several Brigades and Divisions during 1915 before finally becoming part of 33 Division. In 1917 the Division was committed to the Third Battles of Ypres (31st July – 10th November 1917); within this major operation it took part in the Battle of the Menin Road (20th  - 25th  September) and the Battle of Polygon Wood (26th September – 3rd October). David Hughes died during these operations on 28th September aged 37. He is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery (Grave reference XXIV.V.5.), Poperinge, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

     

The Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery is located 12 Kilometers west of Ieper town centre. The cemetery contains 9,893 Commonwealth servicemen, a few of which were brought in from the battlefields after the Armistice, and 883 war graves of other nationalities, mostly French and German. It is the second largest Commonwealth cemetery in Belgium.
